my trip to Florida :)
05:19
So! I know, I know, I haven't written in aaaaages. Please forgive me! First I was working like mad to get ready for the Big Bead Show (which was awesome!) and then I left for Florida! I spent a fantastic three weeks back at home surrounded by family and friends. Above is a picture of my boy, Stefan, me and the teeny princess in my arms is my beautiful niece, Emelia Sparrow! She's such a little doll. I wanted to hold her the whole time!
Speaking of longtime friends, this is my friend Heather. Heather and I were very close for years but we lost touch with all the moving. She's moved around a lot and so have I and we somehow lost each other in the mix. BUT! Fate and the universe decided that it was time for us to reconnect. I was checking out a book at the library (side note: I NEVER go to the library when I visit.. but, on a whim, decided to this time) and, amazingly, Heather was standing right there beside me in line!!! I squealed and we hugged and possibly hopped around a little when we saw each other. We quickly went outside and exchanged all our contact info and arranged to have dinner the following evening. It was so wonderful to see Heather again and she invited Stefan and I out to lunch a couple days later with her fantastic boy, Benny. Seriously, the four of us were all separated at birth somehow! The boys got along really well and we all talked and laughed and ate wonderful Vietnamese food followed by bubble tea. Thank you, Heather, for introducing me to such culinary delights! I'm hoping that Heather and Benny will come visit us soon. We miss them so much already!!
Every so often I would let her parents hold her.. but not terribly often! Here she is with her mommy and daddy. Aren't they the cutest family ever?!
I was even gracious enough to let my mother hold her while Mom's partner, Steve, looked on. You'll notice I was never too far away, though, as all these pictures were taken by me! I let them cuddle her long enough to take a picture then they had to give her right back!! ;)
I missed this kid so much! Kaia came down and spent a week with me at my mother's house and it was so much fun. We painted nails, coloured hair, went on shopping trips and to the Everglades! We also went to the beach and to a very famous ice cream parlour, Jaxson's. I do have pictures of ALL of that but I tried to keep this relatively picture light.. ha. I think I failed a bit!
This is me with one of my favourite people in the entire world, Marc. And before you ask how I have two left hands, those are my sister's bunny ears behind us ;) Marc and I have been friends for nearly 20 years now! I can hardly believe it. We've been through an awful lot together and it's always a pleasure to see him whenever I visit. He's probably the funniest person I know, too, and he always has us dying with laughter :)
Mom suggested we take a trip through the Everglades while we were there. Plenty of South Floridians have probably done this at one point or another but it had been years since I had gone so we saddled up, slathered on the sunscreen (UGH), put on hats and braved the Florida sun! It was so beautiful and we really enjoyed it. It was the most perfect day and we took plenty of pictures like the one above. I think this picture really says it all.
After the airboat ride, there was an alligator wrestling show and Kaia elected to pose with a "baby" alligator. The baby is in quotes because HOLYMOLY! When I picture a baby alligator, I picture something that could fit in the palm of my hand!! Kaia loved it and I love having this moment captured :)
We packed a picnic lunch and decided to have it right there at the tables beside the water. There were peacocks EVERYWHERE! They were so gorgeous and would eat out of your hand! Stefan showed us all that he is the peacock whisperer by getting the peacock to jump up and take the food. I managed to capture this peacock in mid-jump and I LOVE this shot!
I couldn't write a blog post without mentioning beads at all so here you go! While I was in Florida I bought nail polish that matches my beads!!! How cute is this?! I love it :D
I'll be off to Denmark for Christmas but I promise to post pictures of that when I return! I hope you all have a lovely holiday season. Spread some love!
Love,
keiara

LOADS of new beads for sale!
08:38
Hi everyone!
Soooooooo.. I tried to blog the other day. I was having an "admin day" (oh joy) and I figured I would update my blog as well but Blogspot said, "Oh. You want to accomplish something today? Well have I got news for you! DENIED!" I then ranted and raved and maybe got tears in my eyes just a little.. and finally I told it if it wanted to act that way then FINE I didn't really want to update my blog anyway! SO THERE! Welcome to my life. It's more fun than a box of tarantulas. *high fives Payton*
And back to the point. I have beads and jewellery for sale! YAY! The above necklace, Pastel Rainbow Spiral Necklace, can be found in my Ready to Go Jewellery section in my by keiara webshop (and that's all the links I could fit in one sentence). But wait! There's more!
These super adorable Candy Kooky Owl Earrings are also in my webshop. Candy is one of my favourite owls to make. I love the pink with the sky blue SO much. Actually, I love it so much that I also have a cat, cupcakes and coffee cups in the same colours. It reminds me of cotton candy (or candy floss for you British-types) and although I HATE cotton candy (what?? it's gross!) I lovelovelove the look of the stuff :) It always *seems* like a good idea.. then I put it in my mouth and grimace and, hey now, what are we talking about???!!! Moving on!

I've recently been trying my hand at more foodie-type beads again. I tried them aaaaaaages ago but it was in the very beginning and, well, they sucked. But now they're pretty cute, right?? Right?! *threaten.. bribe.. whine.. beg* Yes, I knew you liked them ;) These pretty cups of coffee are in my webshop as well and I'm loving them so much I almost don't want to part with them. Which leads me to this: I have a trick I play on myself. Whenever I'm making beads that I think are stupidly cute, I make them in colours that I don't particularly love (okok, any colour but purple will do it) so I can force myself to part with them. Cause, hey, I've got willpower and all but if these little suckers were in purple or, better yet, black with purple polka dots? Yeah, they'd be mine. No chance. And a girl's gotta pay bills so... here you go!
Here are some of my recent foodie bead efforts. I made cups of coffee, tea, chai, eggnog, a glass mug of beer (I LOVE this one!), fried eggs, pancakes, a slice of cake, coffee beans, ice cream cones and a donut. They look so cute all arranged together, don't they? OH! The black mug in the picture is a bead replica of the boy's favourite coffee mug. Heehee! He loves it :) Some of these yummies are in my by keiara Etsy shop, some are in my by keiara ArtFire shop and some are in my by keiara webshop. You'll just have to check them ALL out!
These darling sets are some of my new kooky lentil range. I have a few of these in my Etsy and the Rudolph ones are in my webshop. I REALLY love making these.. I made 11 sets over a two day period!
I call this set Big Breakfast because, well, it's a huuuuuuge set by my standards! I rarely enjoy making sets so I tend to, you know, not make them.. heh. However! I'm loving these food beads so much that I find myself making pairs of coffee beans or fried eggs while I'm thinking of other things to make. Happily, this creates a nice big set of beads just like a grown-up lampworker! Ha. This set, featuring pancakes, fried eggs and coffee beans is in my ArtFire shop. Be sure to check it out!
Ok, guys. I'll stop the rambling for now. I'm still working my tail off for the Big Bead Show but I thought I'd better give you some new pretties to look at ;)
Have a wonderful weekend!
Love,
keiara

food and holiday-themed beads!
04:25
Hi everyone!
I'm still preparing for the Big Bead Show (OMG - it's almost here!!!!) and I thought the Cupcake Queen (as I've been dubbed by the community) should probably have, you know, CUPCAKES for sale! I made a few up yesterday in various styles and sizes. I just love cupcakes! (Speaking of which: I may have bought a cupcake salt and pepper set and a cupcake tote bag the other day. The boy wanted to know why I needed the salt and pepper shakers since I already have some gorgeous purple Fiestaware ones. I shook my head sadly and told him that he would never understand. It's all about THEMES, people!! When I have a tea party and use all my cupcake things, how awesome will it be to have salt and pepper shakers, too?!? Of course now I have to find an excuse to cook food that requires salt and pepper for a tea party.. hmm..!)
And why stop at cupcakes? I've tried my hand at pancakes and eggs before but I hadn't quite had the nerve to try a coffee cup. HA! It's a teeny bit wonky, but I am VERY pleased with my first attempt! I see more of these in the near future.. maybe with some bacon and a glass of juice!

Earring pairs tend to be very popular at the show so I've been making lots of them. Here are some micro owls, bats, zombie bears, snowgirls and Rudolphs. They're super mini and SOOOO much fun to make! You just can't help but giggle when you look at them :)
Here is a pair of the micro owls in my hand to show off their exceedingly teeny statures! They're only about 10-11mm tall! Teehee :)
In other news: I've opened an ArtFire shop! If you haven't visited it yet, please go have a look :)
As always there are plenty of beads in my by keiara Etsy shop and also in my by keiara webshop just waiting to come home with you.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Love,
keiara

beads, baking and Gramma
05:27
Hi everyone!
Things around these parts have been a bit emotional and hectic. My grandmother passed away last week. It's very difficult to be so far away from home at a time like this. Interestingly, I woke up that morning feeling very out of sorts. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong. I decided, as you do, to visit Canterbury Cathedral. While I was there, I wrote out a prayer for my grandmother (as well as for my sister and her unborn daughter and a friend who recently passed) which is then placed on the altar during mass the following morning. I asked that god watch over her and keep her in his arms as her health has been failing for some time now. (Some of you will remember I took an emergency trip to Florida during the spring to spend some time with her.) A few minutes after returning home, my sister called to tell me that Gramma had passed in the night. I believe it was her spirit that moved me to make the trip and I am so glad that I did it. I'm sure she'll always know how much I love her.
I felt inspired to create a series of beads in Gramma's memory. She was always very supportive of my art and always asked how the beads were going :) She would tell me how proud she was of me and she was so excited when my beads and artist profile appeared in Bead Magazine (I took a copy with me to Florida and we read it together). So I created the above series which I entitled Granlee Gardens and I am so pleased with how they turned out. I think she really would have loved them.
There are two things I do when I can't sit still with my own thoughts: make beads and bake. I've been doing lots of baking this past week! The above shot is of my Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies from Bakerella's site. I iced mine with chocolate fudge icing and WOW are these awesome! The brownie is gorgeous and chewy while the cookie is more like a standard chocolate chip cookie. It has wonderful textures and they are so ridiculously easy to make that it's almost embarrassing!
Next up are Jelly Donut Muffins. I made these from a fantastic USA compilation cookbook that contains loads of wonderful American recipes. The downside, of course, is that it's also full of ingredients that I can't get in this country. I've been looking into importing certain things and, failing that, making some components from scratch. Did you know you can make homemade Cool Whip? Yeah, I didn't either! Anyway, back to the muffins! These were very, very tasty but not really worth the extra effort of putting the jam INSIDE the muffins, if you ask me. They bake up light and fluffy with a gorgeous, slightly crispy top. Next time I'll make the muffins and just serve them with jam, though ;)

I've been craving cinnamon sugar-y stuff lately so this morning I whipped up a batch of Cinnamon Sugar Muffins. These are FANTASTIC! The muffin is a basic recipe which I added nutmeg to for an extra bit of flavour. Once they're baked (but still a bit warm), they're dipped in melted butter and rolled around in cinnamon sugar. HEAVEN! The cinnamon sugar becomes a bit crisp and complements the airy muffin perfectly. Also: everything in my kitchen is cupcake-themed. In this shot you can see my sugar, coffee and tea tins as well as my cutting board and coffee mug. You should see the other side of the kitchen!! Cupcake stuff EVERYWHERE! I even have a little cupcake bank for loose change.. lol :)
Lest you think that I've been doing nothing but baking, here are some beads I made the past two days. I also made a massive number of lovely little earring pairs for the show, too! I try very hard to stick to a relatively simple sounding rule when I have an upcoming show: for each bead I make for a customer, I make a bead for the show. Sounds simple, right? Welllll, not so much! Both days I had to quit before I really wanted to because my kiln was too full! I think it might be time to invest in a bigger kiln ;) I seem to have outgrown my Paragon SC2 :( Poor baby.. lol :)
As always, I have new beads (and old favourites) in my by keiara Etsy shop (including one of the Granlee Garden focals) and in my by keiara webshop (including a Granlee Garden necklace which is so pretty I desperately want to keep it for myself!)
Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Tuesday - have some links!
07:04
Hi everyone!
Yesterday my little Munchkin turned 15! I can't quite believe it. Kaia is growing up so fast and she's such a great kid. I'm a lucky girl :) She asked for some lil bits, kooky kritters and classic cats, all turned into jewellery, for her birthday so now she has even MORE cuteness in her jewellery collection. It's nice to have such a loyal fan.. heehee ;) Above is a picture of some of my latest lil bits. They've proven quite popular so I added their own made-to-order section in my by keiara webshop. Check it out!
This cute kooky kitten, Blossom, is now available in my by keiara Etsy shop. I created her with one of my favourite frit blends. I just love those colours!

I also listed this big hole bead, Faerie Whispers, in my by keiara Etsy shop. My big hole beads fit Troll, Pandora, Biagi and similar bracelet systems. Of course, I wear mine in my dreads! They're a great accessory :)
So how was your weekend? I had a nice, relaxing time catching up on episodes of True Blood and Doctor Who. My favourite Doctor is still Christopher Eccleston with David Tennant in second. I'm still not sold on this new Doctor although his companion is quite darling! Redheads rule ;) I also ended up making some lemon cupcakes and a super yummy chili. I really should have taken some pictures but, ummm, it didn't last long enough for that ;) I'm in a baking mood today but haven't decided what to make yet. I called my mother and got her American biscuit recipe (similar to scones) and I've been dying to make some so maybe that'll win out. I also have a craving for brownies, though, so maybe it'll be both! Ohh, I have all the stuff to make the chocolate chip cookie topped brownies. If you haven't had these yet, PLEASE do yourself a favour and make some up! I spread some chocolate fudge icing on top and they were super yummy :) I used the recipe on Bakerella's website. She's my hero :)
Ok, off to bake! Have a wonderful day :)

game nerd.. beads!
05:18
Hi everyone!
As many of you already know, I'm a serious game nerd. I wear the title with pride and have met SO many wonderful people through gaming. Having said that, I don't actually play Worms, a game that consists of ridiculously adorable little worm armies fighting each other. However, plenty of my friends do so I decided to make a little worm bead to make them giggle ;) There is an option for your little worm army to wear halos, hence the angel worm above. I think he's SO cute!
I've also been working on lots of orders and holiday-themed beads. I added some of these to my by keiara Etsy shop so if you like what you see, go have a peek!

I can never quite resist the pictures of these beads. Whenever I do the Big Bead Show (which is coming up in October!), I always make tons of earring pairs like the ones pictured here. As a matter of fact, these pretties will be joining me at the show :) These simple designs always strike me as so elegant.
With Christmas right around the corner (heehee), I've started in with my Christmas collection, too. This is my traditional Christmas tree focal and I really love making these. This one is currently for sale in Etsy shop along with my Snowfamily Set and my Christmas Friends set. I LOVE holiday beads!
My Twilight Tree is one of my most popular tree focals and one of my lovely customers requested that I turn it into one of my spiral ribbon necklaces. I used one of my all-time favourite ribbons and I love the way it turned out.
Any weekend plans? I have students the next couple of weekends so I'm going to take some time to relax this weekend. I have a new cookie recipe that I'm dying to try out, too. I've also been debating between lemon cupcakes or my family's chocolate cupcake recipe (which is absolutely TDF!!) Knowing me, I'll probably just end up making both! I'm really glad I have a decent-sized freezer ;)
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Love,
keiara

beads, beads.. and more beads!
06:37
Hi everyone!
Kaia left for Florida (and her first day of high school!!!) over the weekend and I was a very sad bunny indeed :'( Before she left she asked if I could make her a key necklace with the above key and, unable to say no to her adorable face, I let her choose a ribbon and put it together. Isn't it lovely? The ribbon is by the wonderful Diane of Sowzere Designs and it couldn't be prettier! The colours are so gorgeous and the way they flow into each other.. well, it makes me sigh with delight, that's for sure :)
I've also been making TONS of beads lately. Creating new beads, keeping up with orders AND making beads for the upcoming Big Bead Show is, literally, more than a full-time job! Above are some of my latest creations and some old favourites, too. As always, if you like what you see, feel free to check out my by keiara webshop and my by keiara Etsy shop. I have lots and lots of glassy goodies to choose from!

This is a set of spacers I made for a lovely customer who prefers dainty beads. I'm happy to report she is absolutely over the moon with them and is already requesting more in the near future :) Although I rarely make frit beads, or spacers for that matter, I LOVE the look of them. It was a real treat to make these and string them all together.
Here is a pair of my Twilight Kooky Owls in the micro size. These little guys are an astonishingly small 11mm tall! They are among the smallest sculptural beads I make and although they are VERY difficult to make, they make me smile to no end :)
More bead orders from yesterday. Oh, yes, it was a looooooong day at the torch :)
And on to the important stuffs!! After reading about the program, hearing so much about it and also having had cancer touch my family, I decided to donate some beads to the Beads of Courage program. Please have a look and, if you're a glass artist, donate some beads. You don't need me to tell you that putting a smile on the face of a child battling a serious illness is more than worth the effort ;)
I hope you're all having a wonderful day!
